Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates for the trek?June 16-19, 2010

Who can go on the trek?Mutual age youth and those who will be at least 12 years old by Sep.1, 2010. If you graduate from high school next spring and have been involved in trek preparations, you are also invited.

Will there be requirements to go on the trek?
Yes. You will be asked to do a few things so you will be prepared. The requirements will be introduced at the September fireside. If you want to start now, read a book on the handcart pioneers. The Price We Paid is a good one.  The trek requirements are now listed please check the following link.  Trek Requirements

How much walking will we do?
We will walk and pull handcarts from 5 to 10 miles each day. It will be important to be in shape and to have sturdy boots/shoes. Start now to exercise and to break in your shoes. You will be glad you did!

What should I be doing now to prepare for the trek?
The best thing you can do is to work on the requirements. Some of them will take longer than others. Hopefully, you have already started to read a pioneer book. Exercising through the winter will also help. Remember that your trek experience will depend on how well you prepare.

When do I need to have my pioneer clothes?
Plan on having all of your pioneer clothing finished or bought by March 31, 2009. You will need it for a stake trek activity that evening.

When will I be assigned to a trek family?
Families will be organized by ward. Bishoprics will call the Ma’s and Pa’s and assign youth to each family in January.

Can I wear contacts?
The use of contacts is discouraged. The wind never stops blowing in Wyoming and the handcarts make a lot of dust. Plan now to have a pair of glasses you can use.

Can I go on the trek if I am a high school senior?
If you graduate from high school this spring, have completed the requirements and have been involved in the activities, you are invited.

When do I need to return my Permission/Medical form?
Youth return this form to your Ma/Pa and adults return it to your ward medical person before April 24, 2010. The Stake will collect the forms at the meeting on April 24.

What will we be doing each day of the trek?
Wednesday: Travel to WY, see Ind. Rock, camp near Martin’s Cove, trek 3-4 miles.
Thursday: Experience Martin’s Cove, camp at Willie Center, trek 5-6 miles.
Friday: Trek 10 miles near the Willie Center, camp at Rock Creek Hollow.
Saturday: Testimony meeting, travel home.

When do I need to have all of my personal equipment together?
Your bucket should be packed and ready to go with you on the morning of the trek. Your buckets will be loaded on the buses and the plastic bag with your sleeping bag will be loaded onto your ward equipment truck.

Will everybody ride the buses?
There is room on the buses for all youth and Ma/Pa’s. All other support people will need to travel in private vehicles. We strongly encourage carpooling, as parking is limited at the campgrounds and we need to keep costs as low as possible. The Stake will reimburse you for gas used as long as you have received pre-approval (forms will be available at the 4/24 training meeting) and then submit receipts after we come home.
